Union General Ulysses S. Grant
General Ulysses S. Grant was born on April 27, 1822. Hiram Grant’s family has had experience in war when his great-grandfather fought in the French and Indian war and his grandfather fought in the Revolution at Bunker Hill. Ulysses Grant’s actual name was “Hiram” but when Congressman Thomas L. Hammer nominated him to the United States Military Academy, Hiram accidentally wrote down his name as “Ulysses S. Grant of Ohio” and was called that ever since. Ulysses Grant was promoted to captain in 1853 and was assigned to command at Fort Humboldt in California. Ulysses Grant fought in many battles with important ones such as The Battle of Shiloh, The Vicksburg campaign, Chattanooga, and the Overland Campaign. On April 9, 1865, Lee surrendered to Grant in Appomattox, Virginia. This officially ended the war with a Union Victory. On March 4, 1869 Ulysses S. Grant was elected president. When Grant was elected the 11 states in the south that had seceded during or before the Civil War, was brought back into the United States. Also, during the his presidency the 15th Amendment was passed which allowed African Americans the right to vote. That is a summary of General Ulysses S. Grant.
Confederate General Robert E. Lee
Robert E. Lee was born on January 19, 1807. Robert’s father, Henry “Light-Horse Harry” Lee, was a cavalry hero from the Revolutionary war. This made Robert E. Lee destined for military greatness. When Robert E. Lee turned 18 years old, he enlisted at West Point Military Academy. After his graduation Robert E. Lee married George Washington’s great-granddaughter Mary Custis and had three sons; Custis, Rooney, and Rob. When the United States went to war with Mexico, Lee could not have been more excited. This is because he had aspired his whole life to be like his father and fight in a major war. Lee was put under command of General Winfield Scott, whom praised Lee for being brave and smart during combat. In 1859 Lee was put in charge of stopping John Brown’s raid at Harper’s Ferry. After he successfully ended revolt, he was suggested to lead the Union if the Country went to war. When the war ended with the Confederate loss, Lee was excused from being hanged by Lincoln and Grant to return to his family in Virginia. October 12, 1870 Robert E. Lee died from the effects of pneumonia. That is a summary of Robert E. Lee.
