Battle of Vicksburg The Battle of Vicksburg took place on May 18 - July 4, 1863. It was a part of the campaign Grant’s Operations against Vicksburg. The other battles that played a big part of this campaign were; The Battle of Raymond, The Battle of Port Gibson, and finally The Battle of Champion Hill. There was a grand total of 110,000 soldiers that had participated in this particular battle (77,000 Union Soldiers, and 33,000 Confederate soldiers). The two Generals of each side were General Ulysses S. Grant for the Union, and General John C. Pemberton for the Confederates. This one specific battle was a part of a month long campaign. A campaign is a series of three or more different battles. The main goal of the battle was to take control of Vicksburg from the Confederates. The Union achieved their goal. There were 4,800 total Union deaths and about 3,300 total Confederate deaths with around 30,000 captured Confederate Soldiers. When the Union won this battle it gave them complete control of the crucial outpost at Mississippi river. General Grant gained reputation as a legitimate general after this victory. That is a summary of the battle of Vicksburg.

Battle of Shiloh
The Battle of Shiloh was from April 6 - 7, 1862. The general for the Union was General Ulysses S. Grant and Don Carlos Buell, and for the Confederates is General Albert Sidney Johnston and P.G.T. Beauregard. The Battle of Shiloh was part of the Federal Penetration up the Cumberland and Tennessee Rivers campaign. The other battle in this particular campaign was the Battle at Fort Donelson. The battle of Shiloh was one of the bloodiest Civil War battles in Civil War history or U.S. history up to that point. It played an important role in Union progress in the west and the Union victory gave Tennessee to the North. Despite the Union’s victory, the cost of the victory was high. Grant’s and Buell’s forces totaled about 62,000, afterwards 1,754 were killed, 8,408 were wounded, and 2,885 were captured or missing for a total of 13,047 casualties. Of 45,000 Confederates engaged, 1,723 were killed, 8,012 wounded, and 959 missing for a total of 10,694 casualties. The 23,741 casualties in total were more than any other battle at the time (Bull Run, Wilson’s Creek, Fort Donelson, and Pea Ridge).
